The Battle

History & Significance

Angus, mormaer of Moray and a claimant to the Scottish throne through descent from Lulach, mounted a major rebellion against David I. His army was defeated and he was killed at Stracathro in Angus. His death allowed David I to reorganise Moray as a royal province, planting Norman settlers and castles to permanently break its independence. It was the definitive end of Moray as a semi-autonomous Gaelic kingdom within Scotland.
