Venner's Fifth Monarchist rebels fought a running action in Wood Street in the City of London during their January 1661 rising. Armed with swords and muskets the fifty-strong band fought with considerable ferocity, killing and wounding several soldiers and watchmen before temporarily withdrawing into Highgate. Their unexpected military effectiveness alarmed the restored government.
