Carmarthen — the principal town of south-west Wales — was contested during the Civil War. Parliamentary forces under Colonel Rice Powell captured it from the Royalists in 1644, establishing Parliamentary control of the south Wales coast. Carmarthen served as the Parliamentary administrative base for west Wales during the subsequent campaigns, including the siege of Pembroke Castle.
