The Battle

History & Significance

As Agricola advanced overland, the Classis Britannica operated in coordinated fashion along the Aberdeenshire coast, raiding settlements, destroying fishing fleets, and seizing supplies. Tacitus records that the fleet terrorised tribes who had never seen Roman warships. Landing parties struck on headlands and river mouths, preventing the Caledonians from concentrating all strength against the land advance — the first combined-arms operation in Scottish waters.
