History & Significance

Fairfax took Tiverton Castle in October 1645 by a fortunate cannon shot that cut the portcullis chain, allowing the gates to crash open and the castle to be rushed; the swift fall of Tiverton opened the road north Devon and led directly to the final campaign that ended at Torrington.
