Richard Marshal, Earl of Pembroke, raised rebellion against Henry III in 1233 partly in reaction to Henry's reliance on Poitevin favorites and partly in defense of Hubert de Burgh. The rebellion involved military operations in Wales and the Marches. Richard defeated a royal force at Monmouth and raided into the Marches. He was later captured in Ireland and died of his wounds. The rebellion was the most serious domestic challenge of Henry III's middle years before de Montfort.
