The Battle

History & Significance

Bruce assigned his brother Edward the task of conquering Galloway after their initial successes in Carrick and Ayrshire. Edward Bruce conducted a brutal campaign that broke the MacDowells — the main pro-English power in Galloway. The submission of Galloway gave Bruce control of south-west Scotland and removed any threat to his rear as he prepared to reduce the great castles held by the English. It was a strategic achievement as important as any pitched battle.
