Stirling Castle was besieged and taken by Cromwellian forces in August 1651 after the Scottish field army had marched south for Worcester. The castle garrison under Colonel Cunningham held out until August when it surrendered on terms. The fall of Stirling Castle was a symbolic moment; the castle that had dominated Scottish history for centuries was now in English hands.
