The Militia Act of 1662 reconstituted the county militias of England on a new basis, replacing the Interregnum volunteer forces with a property-rated militia under lord-lieutenants. Across the northern counties large musters were held to assess militia strength. The Act represented the Restoration settlement's determination to control armed force and prevent any future Puritan or Royalist extremist rising.
