The Battle

History & Significance

On the day before Towton the Yorkist vanguard under Lord Fitzwalter attempted to secure Ferrybridge on the River Aire. A Lancastrian force under Lord Clifford surprised and routed the Yorkists at the bridge, killing Fitzwalter. Warwick was wounded. Edward IV sent Fauconberg on a flanking march to Castleford and Clifford was killed during his retreat northward.
