History & Significance

North Pembrokeshire saw sustained fighting as Parliamentary forces based at Pembroke Castle pushed to control the surrounding countryside. Newport (Trefdraeth) — the small town below the Norman castle on the Nevern estuary — was contested. The Pembrokeshire campaign of 1644-45 was one of the most sustained military operations in Welsh Civil War history, culminating in Cromwell's own siege of Pembroke Castle in 1648.
