The Battle

History & Significance

Argyll advanced on Inveraray, the Campbell capital, during his 1685 rising and briefly occupied his ancestral town. However, government forces under the Earl of Atholl advanced through Perthshire and cut off Argyll from his northern clans. The Inveraray occupation was brief and Argyll was forced to abandon it as his strategic position deteriorated. Government forces eventually cornered and routed the rising.
