History & Significance

The establishment of the fort at Luguvalium (Carlisle) completed Roman control of the Solway plain and gave the army a base for operations into southwest Scotland. The site at the lowest crossing of the Eden was ideal. Carlisle became the most important Roman centre in the northwest and is one of the few Roman cities in Britain to have been continuously occupied to the present day.
