Lowestoft on the Suffolk coast was threatened by Royalist naval activity and the possibility of Dutch intervention in 1643. Parliamentary naval forces patrolled the offshore waters and the town garrison was put on alert on several occasions. Small encounters between Parliamentary coastal guard vessels and Royalist naval craft marked the maritime dimension of the Eastern Association campaign.
