The Battle

History & Significance

The Royalist army was headquartered at Market Harborough on the night of 13-14 June 1645. In the dawn hours of Naseby day, Parliamentary cavalry surprised the Royalist cavalry pickets at Naseby village, triggering the decision to stand and fight. The surprise at Market Harborough\'s outposts meant the Royalists were caught partly unready. The subsequent battle destroyed Charles I\'s main field army. Market Harborough became permanently associated with the eve of the decisive battle of the English Civil War.

Forces Involved

Parliamentary: New Model Army cavalry. Royalist: rearguard pickets of the main Royalist army
