Robert de Mowbray, Earl of Northumberland, led a baronial rebellion against William Rufus. Yorkshire was part of the theatre of operations. William suppressed the revolt methodically; Mowbray was captured, imprisoned, and ended his days in a monastery. The rebellion demonstrated the continuing instability of Norman Yorkshire and the threat posed by over-mighty northern earls.
