During the advance of Montrose's small royalist force southward through Ross-shire in 1650, a preliminary skirmish took place near Ord Hill before the main engagement at Carbisdale. Covenanting cavalry patrols tracked and harassed Montrose's march, providing intelligence that allowed Colonel Strachan to set his ambush at Carbisdale.
