Southampton was held for Parliament throughout the Civil War, serving as a key supply port. A Royalist raiding party attempted to seize it in 1644 but was repulsed. Southampton's continued Parliamentary control denied the Royalists a Hampshire port and helped sustain the garrison at Portsmouth.
