History & Significance

During the Second Civil War, Carlisle was regarrisoned by Royalists who hoped to link up with the Scottish Engager army of Hamilton. After Hamilton's destruction at Preston, the garrison was isolated. Lambert besieged and took it in October 1648, finally securing the north for Parliament.
