History & Significance

Richard Cameron, the most radical of the "Cameronian" Covenanters, was caught in the moorland of Airds Moss by government dragoons and killed. His hands and head were cut off and taken to Edinburgh. His followers — who had renounced allegiance to Charles II at the Sanquhar Declaration — were hunted through the Killing Time. The Cameronian Regiment of the British Army perpetuates his memory.
