History & Significance

The last native Prince of Wales died at Irfon Bridge near Builth on 11 December 1282 in circumstances that remain disputed. He was separated from his main army, possibly lured away, and killed in a skirmish. His head was sent to London. The main Welsh army was then destroyed at the bridge itself. The news caused shock across Wales. Llywelyn had been trying to raise the south Welsh lords against Edward I and was nearly there when he was killed.
