After the victory at Mynydd Carn (1081), Gruffudd ap Cynan was captured by Norman treachery and imprisoned for many years. He eventually escaped (c.1094) and began the slow reconquest of Gwynedd — aided by the death of Hugh of Shrewsbury in the Norse sea-fight of 1098. Gruffudd ruled Gwynedd until 1137 and was the grandfather of the Owain Gwynedd who defied Henry II. His career represents the longest sustained recovery of a Welsh kingdom from Norman domination.
