History & Significance

Appleby Castle, the principal fortress of Westmorland, held a Royalist garrison. Parliament besieged it after the fall of Carlisle. Its surrender gave Parliament control of the Eden Valley and the route between Lancashire and the northern Royalist territories. Lady Anne Clifford later restored it.
