History & Significance

Pevensey Castle in Sussex was held by Odo of Bayeux during the rebellion against William Rufus in 1088. The rebellion sought to replace Rufus with Robert Curthose. Rufus besieged Pevensey and starved the garrison into submission. Robert Curthose s relief fleet never arrived and Odo was forced to surrender after six weeks. The fall of Pevensey effectively ended the rebellion.
