History & Significance

Rhayader — at the meeting of the Wye and Elan valleys — controlled the main route through central Wales from south to north. Its strategic position made it contested during the Civil War as Parliament sought to cut communications between Royalist north and south Wales. The town's castle (now reduced to earthworks) was used as a garrison point.
