History & Significance

Before the Battle of Usk in May 1405 the Welsh forces had captured Usk Castle itself. The subsequent English counter-attack at the Battle of Usk reversed this gain and resulted in the destruction of the Welsh force and the execution of prisoners. The sequence of capture followed by immediate loss demonstrates the difficulty Glyndwr faced in holding lowland towns and castles against English counter-attack.
