The Battle

History & Significance

The engagement at Largs was primarily a beach skirmish rather than a pitched battle. Norwegian ships were driven ashore by storms and Scottish forces under Haakon of Haakonsson attacked the stranded Norwegians. The Scots were unable to destroy the Norse completely but inflicted sufficient casualties to demonstrate Norwegian vulnerability. The storm damage and the skirmish convinced Haakon to abandon the campaign, and he died at Kirkwall on the return voyage.
