Loch Arkaig in Lochaber was both a refuge for Prince Charles in his wanderings and the hiding place of the famous Loch Arkaig treasure — the French gold landed too late for Culloden. Government forces repeatedly attempted to sweep the remote country around Loch Arkaig, knowing that Jacobite fugitives and the prince himself were believed to be in the area. Cameron of Lochiel, despite being wounded at Culloden, directed the concealment of both the prince and the gold. Several skirmishes occurred as Jacobite survivors defending the Arkaig country fought off government search parties. The gold was largely stolen by factional infighting among the Jacobites themselves.
