The Battle

History & Significance

Cassius Dio records that tribes crossed the Wall and killed a Roman general — possibly a legate or the Dux — along with his troops. This prompted Emperor Commodus to send Ulpius Marcellus, who conducted a harsh campaign to restore Roman control. The episode demonstrates that Hadrian Wall was never an impermeable barrier and that Roman outpost forts north of the Wall were vulnerable.
