History & Significance

Parliament took the county town of Stafford in 1643, giving them a base in a predominantly Royalist county. Sir William Brereton — the energetic Parliamentary commander in the north Midlands — conducted many of the operations in Staffordshire. The town changed hands during the course of the war as the military situation fluctuated.
