History & Significance

After William marched his army to the Tay, Malcolm III of Scotland submitted to him at Abernethy and paid homage for his English lands. Edgar Aetheling was expelled from the Scottish court as a condition of the peace. The Treaty of Abernethy was the first formal acknowledgement of English overlordship over Scotland and established the precedent that English kings would use to claim Scottish subordination throughout the medieval period.
