History & Significance

A clash during the continuing Border warfare of the 1430s. The Black Douglas earls maintained their own foreign policy and Border military operations semi-independently of the Scottish crown. This engagement demonstrated the Douglas ability to operate autonomously in the Border zone — a power that James II would eventually find intolerable and move to destroy.
