The Battle

History & Significance

Ewen MacPherson of Cluny initially held back from joining Prince Charles, having taken a government commission. He was effectively kidnapped and persuaded by the Jacobites while they were camped near Ruthven in August 1745. His MacPhersons — some 300 Badenoch fighting men — subsequently became one of the most committed Jacobite clans in the rising. The MacPhersons fought at Prestonpans and Culloden. Cluny's own loyalty, once given, proved absolute: he spent nine years as a fugitive after Culloden rather than surrender, and the clan maintained its loyalty to him throughout.
