In 1690, Jacobite MacDonald raiding parties from the far northwest conducted forays into Sutherland — one of the most pro-government clan territories in Scotland. The Sutherlands and MacKays of Sutherland were committed Williamites who actively supported the government throughout the Jacobite period. MacDonald raiders from Strathnaver and the northwest attacked Sutherland townships, driving cattle and coercing submission. These northern raids were a significant drain on pro-government clan resources. The Sutherland resistance to Jacobite pressure in 1690 was part of a broader pattern of northern clan conflict that would recur in 1715 and 1746.
