The Battle

History & Significance

The very first military engagement of the '45 rising — before Prestonpans and even before Charles Edward Stuart raised his standard at Glenfinnan. MacDonell of Keppoch and a handful of men bluffed a government company into surrender at High Bridge over the River Spean. Captain Scott was made prisoner. The "army" that captured him was reportedly just twelve men making noise in the woods — one of the rising's more audacious episodes.
