History & Significance

Humphrey de Bohun, Earl of Hereford and Constable of England, and Roger Bigod, Earl of Norfolk and Marshal of England, refused Edward I's demand to serve in Gascony in 1297. They appeared before the king at the Exchequer with armed escorts and threatened non-compliance. When Edward attempted to seize their estates they mustered forces in Norfolk. The confrontation produced Confirmatio Cartarum as a political settlement.
