History & Significance

Constantius Chlorus praetorian prefect Asclepiodotus landed in Hampshire in fog, bypassing Allectus fleet in the Channel, then defeated and killed Allectus in a pitched battle near Calleva Atrebatum (Silchester). The ten-year Britannic Empire was over. A commemorative gold medallion from Trier shows Constantius arriving by sea at London being greeted as liberator. Frankish mercenaries who fled the battle were intercepted and massacred at London.
