The Battle

History & Significance

Alexander Lindsay, Earl of Crawford — nicknamed the 'Tiger Earl' for his ferocity — was the main military ally of the Black Douglases in their conflict with James II. Crawford was defeated at Brechin by a government force. This defeat, combined with James II's personal murder of the 8th Earl of Douglas at Stirling Castle shortly before, broke the Douglas-Crawford alliance and began the final phase of the crown's destruction of the Black Douglas family.
