History & Significance

William Sinclair, Earl of Orkney, engaged in armed resistance against Scottish royal demands for tribute and legal submission in the 1430s. The revolt was partly Norwegian in character as Orkney was still technically Norwegian. The episode illustrated the ambiguous status of the Northern Isles decades before their formal transfer to Scotland in 1468.
