Wiverton Hall near Newark was used as a satellite Royalist garrison supporting Newark's defence. Its reduction by Parliamentary forces in 1645 was part of the tightening of the siege lines around Newark. Such minor posts maintained the garrison's ability to forage and receive supplies; their elimination progressively starved the main garrison.
