The Battle

History & Significance

One of the most dramatic episodes in Tacitus Agricola — the Caledonians selected the Ninth Legion for a surprise night attack as it was the weakest. They broke through the outer defences and fighting reached the tents before Agricola force-marched a relief column through the night. The Caledonians withdrew at dawn but the psychological effect — that Rome could be surprised and nearly defeated — was immense.

Casualties & Losses

Significant Roman casualties within the camp; Caledonian withdrawal losses from pursuing cavalry
