The Battle

History & Significance

Thomas Venner and the survivors of his Fifth Monarchist rising were finally cornered and captured near Mercer's Chapel in Cheapside on 9 January 1661. Venner was severely wounded, with nineteen wounds recorded. He was tried, convicted of high treason, and executed on 19 January 1661 along with twelve of his followers.
