Thomas Earl of Lancaster marched north with a baronial army after his rebellion against Edward II failed at Burton-on-Trent. Intending to reach Scotland and Bruce for support, he was intercepted by royalist forces under Sir Andrew Harclay at the Ure crossing at Boroughbridge. Harclay blocked the bridge and ford, using dismounted men-at-arms and archers in a formation that repulsed Lancaster's mounted charges. Lancaster was captured and later executed at Pontefract.
