History & Significance

Richard Duke of Gloucester, travelling south to escort Edward V to London, intercepted the Woodville escort at Stony Stratford on 30 April 1483. He arrested Earl Rivers and Richard Grey and separated the boy king from his Woodville household. This coup de main gave Gloucester physical possession of the king and was the first overt step toward the usurpation.
