History & Significance

Legio XIV Gemina was assigned the Welsh Marches as its operational zone, pushing west from the Midlands toward the Severn and the Cornovii-Ordovices frontier. The fortress at Viroconium (Wroxeter) was established and Roman authority driven to the edge of the Welsh highlands. Cornovii collaboration was essential — the tribe supplied road-building labour and intelligence about Ordovician movements. Legio XIV would go on to win the epithet Martia Victrix for its role crushing Boudicca.

Forces Involved

Legio XIV Gemina with Gaulish auxiliary cohorts and Dobunni allied scouts
