The Battle

History & Significance

Colonel George Goring, Governor of Portsmouth, declared for the king in 1642 and fortified the town and Southsea Castle. Parliamentary forces besieged Portsmouth from the landward side while the Parliamentary navy blockaded it by sea. After two months Goring escaped by boat and the garrison surrendered.
