History & Significance

Rochester Castle was seized by Odo of Bayeux as a base for the rebellion against William Rufus in 1088. After Pevensey fell, Rufus besieged Rochester. Odo surrendered here as well, ending the rebellion. The siege demonstrated that without a united aristocracy or relief from Normandy, individual castellans could not hold against determined royal assault. Odo was permanently exiled for his treachery.
