Wareham was recaptured by Angevin forces under Robert of Gloucester in 1142, restoring access to the Dorset coast for Matilda's cause. The recapture was part of the Angevin consolidation in the west following Matilda's dramatic escape from Oxford across the ice in December 1142, which restored her position in the west country despite the loss of Oxford itself.
