History & Significance

After the fall of Exeter, Stephen moved to take Bampton, another de Redvers castle. The systematic reduction of Baldwin de Redvers strength in the west cleared the way for royal authority there — until Matilda landed in 1139 and Baldwin returned to fight for her.
