History & Significance

The storming of Lincoln by the Earl of Manchester's Eastern Association army in May 1644 removed a key Royalist garrison controlling the Great North Road. The assault involved fierce fighting in the cathedral precincts and castle. Its capture cleared Parliament's flank before the march to York and the decisive Battle of Marston Moor in July 1644.
